Marshal McLuhan was born in Edmonton, Alberta in 1911. I first discovered him and his ideas while an undergrad at the University of Alberta in the early 1980s. Although he had already passed, and was, as one my professors described him, “a discredited media philosopher” and no longer as well-known as he was during his lifetime and the 1960s, I was fascinated with his ideas and writing. I wanted to learn more. And I did. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
As, I used to say while in grad studies and working on my thesis (on high school or secondary English curricular change in response to changing media environments) that I had read at least more than 1\/2 of all of McLuhan’s writings understood, at least 1\/2 of it! <\/p>\n\n\n\n
